Course samples coming soon!
by Admin User - Saturday, 19 May 2012, 11:30 PM

One thing I LOVE about using my Kindle to buy books on Amazon is the 'sample' feature.  If I'm not quite sure that I want to spend my time on a book, I can read a few pages or chapters and find out if that book is truly right for me.

Now, AEPA is going to be offering samples too.

Samples of a couple of our most popular courses will be available in a few days.  You can open the course, start the activities and then decide if this is the right way and place for you to learn English.

  • Speaking in Context is a course where students participate in some of the types of speaking activities that are common in US college courses.  This includes group work, making presentations, and participating in discussions and seminars.

  • While the 'larger' problems with pronunciation often caused by incorrect use of stress, this course is for students who would like to also improve their pronunciation of specific sounds and patterns not covered in the Advanced Topics course.

  • The focus of this course is developing good pronunciation skills by understanding, hearing and then using the stress patterns of English the way that native speakers do.  Sometimes students of English feel that pronunciation is their 'weakest link', but with the information and practice in this course, students will develop confidence in speaking.

  • In this course, students develop academic reading and listening skills including note taking for textbooks and lectures, developing academic vocabulary and preparing for common types of test questions.

  • The purpose of this course is to develop reading speed and fluency so that students will be able to cope with the reading assignments in American colleges and universities.

  • In US colleges and universities, the most stressful types of writing assigments come during exams when time is limited, and professors expect answers to be specific and very clear. This course teaches students about the expectations of the professors for different types of questions and gives lots of practice and feedback so that students are ready to write good answers with the right amount of specificity in a short amount of time.

  • The five paragraph essay is the most basic form of academic writing in American schools.  This is the type of essay that one writes for the TOEFL, for placement examinations and class assigments.  Students learn how this basic form is organized and developed to fit the expectations of American readers in this course.

  • In academic writing, having an idea is just the beginning; proving it is often the more challenging part of the writing task.  This course teaches students how to develop evidence and organize it in a way that will meet the expectations of academic readers (professors and others).  Many of the tasks in the course involve examples of academic writing, good examples as well as those that need to be improved.

  • In recent years, many colleges and universities in the U.S. have incorporated more writing assignments into their courses, so students will face many different types of writing assignments beyond writing for exams and the typical 5 paragraph essay.  This course provides examples and practice with response writings, reading summaries, extended bibliographies and reviews.

  • In this sample of Grammar 1101, our course on the 4 sentence types in English, you can start the course and see if this course, and online learning, is right for you.

  • Not all grammar errors are equal!  In this course, we prioritize what errors are most distracting to readers and learn how to edit for them quickly.  This is an especially important skill to master before taking classes like 'English 1101' where in class writing assignments are regularly given.  By the end of the course, you will have a personalized editing plan.

  • Participle phrases, reduced clauses and other structures that native speaker writers use to get more 'idea' into fewer words are covered in this course.  You will see these structures used in the academic textbooks, articles and other resources that you will be reading in college.  Mastering these structures will help you produce more sophisticated academic writing.

  • Conditional and hypothetical sentences are one of the last areas that English learners master, yet hypothetical and conditional writing topics are extremely common in U.S. colleges.  Therefore, it is an important grammar topic for those who will come to the U.S. to study.

  • This course reviews the different types of words which are also referred to as 'the parts of speech'.  If you frequently make errors with the parts of speech, this can be a cause of confusion for those who are reading your writing or listening to you speak.

  • The placement test includes sections on listening, writing, grammar and reading.
